ASU Performance in the Borderlands hosted a private screening of Catching Babies on Saturday, May 26th. We had a dinner/ discussion with Puente a la Salud, midwife Marinah Farrell and doula Fatima Muhammed. The women discussed their work helping low-income immigrant women access maternal health care.

Amnesty International calls the USA maternal health care system in crisis with a cesarean rate of 30%. Women without immigration documents in Arizona are especially vulnerable to birth complications. Puente a la Salud is an innovative grassroots model that empowers immigrant women to act as promotoras, promoting awareness of their rights to healthcare and to train their community about health and wellness. Marinah Farrell is the Southwestern representative of the Midwives Alliance of North America and has practiced midwifery both the United States and in Mexico. She is co-owner of a private birth clinic and also provides free services to women at the Worker’s Center. Fatima Muhammed is a doula and parent educator in the community that is committed to providing affordable services to low income, immigrant and women of color.

It was a powerful evening that sparked some amazing collaborations between women in the Valley who are committed to ensuring that all women have access to maternal health care service.
